Meet Charlene

Charlene Fernandez has been fighting to improve our local schools for most of her adult life because she knows education is critical to growing an economy with good jobs.  During her two terms on the Yuma High School Board, she was instrumental in implementing standards to ensure that students graduate ready to compete with other students across the state in college and career choices.  As a staffer for two members of Congress, she worked to make sure that local students were accepted to the country’s military academies.  Because of her commitment to education, Charlene put herself through college and made sure that her three children graduated from Arizona’s public universities – an opportunity she says believes should be available to every child.

Born in Yuma, Charlene’s roots in our community run deep.  She’s served as a board member for the Yuma Community Foundation, the United Way of Yuma County and the Cultural Council of Yuma, as well as a San Luis Community Fund committee member.  She worked with hand-in-hand with rural communities at the state Department of Environmental Quality as an appointee of Gov. Janet Napolitano.

Charlene is a life-long Democrat who we can count on to represent our values at the state legislature.  She was elected to the second-highest position in the Arizona Democratic Party, and was elected to many leadership roles in the Yuma County Democratic Party.  She and her husband, Sergio, have three children, two grandchildren, and live in Yuma.
